Australia is a pretty family friendly place, even for budget travelling. You have several options. One is to hire a car and a caravan (large camper vans are less common in Australia).
The car/caravan option is better because many locations you will need to drive around the local area.
I would recommend that for 6 months you try they buy/sell trick. You buy a caravan for the 6 months and sell it at the end. try www.tradingpost.com.au or www.ebay.com.au
An alternative option is that most caravan parks have onsite vans and cabins, with some locations heading up into the luxury range.
With Australia’s long holidays (4 weeks standard) many families traditionally took long summer holidays and so pretty much everywhere is dotted with such locations.
This means you can stay in motels, cabins and vans in a range of different locations.
