Travel tips – Melbourne?
I am travelling to Melbourne, Australia, for a holiday with my family, in the last week of Jan 09. I would like to know:
1. Any tips on travel within melbourne. Is there something like a octopus card that Hongkong has, which can be used for travel by bus, tram train etc?
2. Whats the best way to reach my hotel in Spencer st, from the airport.
1. There is nothing as fancy as the Octopus card, but the transport ticketing system is integrated, so the same ticket will let you ride trains, trams and buses. (This shouldn’t be a big deal, but it is when you arrive in a city that doesn’t work this way.) The ticket is called a Metcard, and they can be bought at train station, some newsagents, or from vending machines on trams. Be aware that some of the machine accept coins only.
There is a city circle tram that is free. As the name suggests, it does a loop around the centre of the city. Other trams are NOT free.
2. There is an airport shuttle bus that runs from the airport to the station in Spencer St. The bus charges $16 per person, or $36 for family, so it will probably be cheaper than a taxi.
